JSI is a semi autonomous institution operating under the umbrella of the Judiciary. It was created in 2004 by administrative direction of the Hon. the Chief Justice of Uganda, Hon. Justice Benjamin Odoki. It is however in the process of obtaining a legal status which will give it more autonomy so as to become more competitive and stand out on its own.

Mandate

The institute is mandated to provide training for the Judiciary staff both judicial and non judicial. On request, it also provides training for stakeholders in the administration of Justice not only in Uganda but also within the region and far beyond.

Vision & Mission of JSI

Vision: To become a leading provider of high quality training for excellence in the  administration of Justice.
Mission: To develop and deliver sustainable educational, training, research and consultancy programmes for social economic development for all.

Functions of the Institute

The institute is mandated to perform the following functions among others:-

  • Teaching and Training
  • Faculty & Curriculum Development
  • Law Reporting
  • IT, Research & Publications
  • Fundraising, Linkages, Partnership & Networking with other Institutions

Management & Policies of JSI

  • JSI is guided by government policies, rules and regulations.
  • It is headed by the Executive Director who is assisted by the Registrar Research and Training in its day today operations with each function above being managed by different experts.
  • The policy making body is the governing Council headed by the Justice of the Supreme Court

Composition of the Governing Council

  • Chair: Justice of the Supreme Court
  • Vice Chair: A Justice Of Court of Appeal
  • Secretary: Registrar, Research& Training

  • A Judge of High Court,
  • President ULS,
  • Commissioner,
  • Judicial Service Commission,
